What IM/chat services do you use (e.g. Jabber, gmail, etc.)?

I use MSN Messenger, somewhat abashedly -- I don't do a lot of IM, and I'm afraid if I set things up more for real then I will start.

Baaaaaaa^2.

For work chat I use iChat and usually end up using all of its protocols (AIM, because it used to automatically sign you up for an AIM account; Jabber; and apple's Rendezvous/Bonjour thing).

I mostly don't use chat for personal stuff (like cloister, I miss the old mainframe talk experience) but I occasionally use IRC, AIM, or Gale.

I use Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger, formerly Windows Messenger), largely because I already had Passport IDs created, so the MS system was the only one that didn't require me to create yet another online account.

Also, I spent an unreasonable amount of time testing MS' IM solutions for Final Judgment compliance.

On a note completely unrelated to the previous sentence :), I note that Windows Vista does not have any IM software included whatsoever.

I'm usually logged in while I'm at work, but I don't use it much except to coordinate the occasional lunch outing.

I generally only use IM to reach people who are only reachable via IM. When I do, I use AIM.

"none of the above?"

Seriously. I tried the whole IM thing oh, back in '98/99 or thereabouts, but found it to be unsatisfactory compared to the mainframe 'talk' experience I grew accustomed to in college.

Ah, how many times did we chuckle at fingering someone just to start talking to them...

Oh, that was just me? Right.

The only one that works for me at work is the chat in Gmail. I have to provide a valid business case to be allowed to use Y!M, and chatting with spouse and friends isn't one. (Though, at least one person who has it switched on chats with his wife during the day. I should use that.)

I use AIM. I'd use the gmail one if it allowed me to talk to ichat/aim people and I knew anyone else using it. Basically my choice is dictated by the people I chat with using ichat or aim.

I keep meaning to look at other clients that do multi protocols but haven't gotten around to it.

I use AIM mostly, but I have a multi-chat client that lets me log into Yahoo, AIM, Jabber, and MSN all at the same time. That way I cover all my friends. :)
