Worrisome but probably useful article about medical insurance and postpartum depression: Congratulations, You've Been Upgraded.

Probably only interesting to me: WebMD article says that ibuprofen aggravates psoriasis. Argh! I take ibuprofen for a few days every month, as I would imagine most women of childbearing age do.

God, that insurance thing is freaky deaky.

I just had to go self-insured because my COBRA ended and my hubby doesn't have insurance in his two-man shop. The good news? Because my COBRA ended and the way the law works, they could *not* refuse to take me, nor can they impose any "pre-existing conditions" limitations on me. We pay $228/month for three of us, with a good sized (though smaller than I thought!) deductable. Reasonable out-of-pocket limits should we ever have a major catastrophe (heaven forbid, but that's actually why we got insurance. I can pay for my colds and flu, but not if one of us is laid up in the hospital.)

Why is Insurance a for-profit racket anyway? Why is that allowed??

I don't take ibuprofen, I take acetaminophen, caffiene, and aspirin. Mmm, Excedrin Migraine. Yummy. *heh* (I'm lucky enough not to have cramps that require medication more than like once a year. Well, okay, I'd trade cramps for migraines, thanks...)

me too

Well, not the excedrin migraine part, but the rest of it -- tylenol and low-dose aspirin are my painkillers of choice. Ibuprofen shreds my stomach unless I'm taking something like Percocet that so slows my digestion that I don't really notice.

I'm really happy to hear that your self-insurance situation turned out so well! That's fantastic peace of mind.

As for the insurance being a for-profit racket, the story I heard is that when wages were regulated during WWII, companies competing for scare workers had to come up with other ways to lure them in, and insurance as we know it was born.
