A neat example of rapid transit created with a small budget and no big dig, from the Brazilian city of Curitiba.

The no-replacement option for the Highway 99 viaduct is gaining favor, mainly because money talks (the city can't afford a tunnel). I have no idea if redistributing traffic would work, but it would be such a cool thing to get a waterfront with more public spaces, and more transit options too.

glad to hear Curitiba is getting more coverage

I read about that in a book a couple years or so ago and was really impressed. It isn't just their transit system that is cool either; it's their system of governance, local culture that resulted from that governance, and the way it harnesses good ideas to lead to better ideas in all aspects of the city.

Visiting that city is on my list of Places to Go.
